Amazon.com, Microsoft in Indie Film Project

Software giant Microsoft Corp. announced Monday that it and online retailer Amazon.com Inc. have founded a project that intends to encourage independent filmmakers to transition to the high-density DVD format. Called the HD DVD Indies Project, Microsoft said the initiative will provide free authoring and setup services for up to 1,000 selected indie titles. Microsoft said CustomFlix, an Amazon subsidiary, will utilize its novel “manufacturing-on-demand” technology to produce and ship indie DVDs as they are ordered from Amazon.com. Founded in July 1995, Amazon.com is headquartered in Seattle. Established in 1975, Microsoft Corp. is based in Redmond, Wash.
