Amazon Web Services Extends Virtual Private Clouds

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, the web services arm of Amazon.com, said today that it is extending the rollout of its Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) service. The firm said it is now supporting the VPC service across all of its regions. Amazon VPC is a service which allows businesses to carve out a private section of Amazon Web Services, fully controlling IP addresses, subnets, routing, and network gateways. The service is being used by companies to better control security and connections into their data. In addition to the VPS rollout, Amazon said it has introduced a new service called AWS Direct Connect; the new service creates a direct, private network connection into Amazon's datacenters, so that data can get from companies to Amazon in a "more consistent" way. That new direct connection service is available right now in only Virginia, but Amazon plans to add the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo and Singapore in the next several months.
