Bing, the online search engine which is part of Microsoft, stepped quietly into the battle ranging between Apple and Google today, reminding "new smartphone" users to download its app, which includes such features as maps, traffic, walking, transit, and driving directions. Bing and Microsoft have mostly been quiet as Apple users have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new iOS 6 and iPhone 5 mapping apps, which replaced Google Maps with data from TomTom. iPhone users have complained about widespread missing information, loss of detail, and other issues since Apple decided to drop Google's maps in its newest OS release. Apple and Google have had a falling out--due to the intense competition between iOS and Android--which resulted in Apple dropping both Google's mapping functions, as well as no longer auto-loading YouTube on its new devices. Bing's app includes both maps as well as access to Bing's other functionality.
