Cray Wins DOE Contract

Seattle-based Cray has won another, Department of Energy contract, this time at Argonne National Laboratory, the company said this week. Cray said it has been awarded a subcontract from Intel, to delivery two of its supercomputers and associated storage into the DOE's Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) at Argonne National Laboratory. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Cray said the new "Aurora" system will be based on its next generation, "Shasta" supercompuer, which is the successor to its current Cray XC line of supercomptuers, using Intel's high performance computing (HPC) technology. The system is expected to offer up 180 petaflops of peak performance.
