GigaPan Claims World's Largest Photo

Portland-based GigaPan, a startup commercialization technology developed by NASA and Carnegie Mellon University for creating ultra-high resolution digital photos, is claiming today that it has set a world record for the world's largest, digital panorama. The firm said its software has generated a 45 gigapixel photo of an image of Dubai, taken by photographer Gerald Donovan. The firm said the photo, if printed out, would be the size of nearly 1200 billboards. GigaPan's product uses a robotic camera mount to take thousands of pictures of a single image, which are stitched together into one single image. GigaPan said the Dubai image was stitched together from nearly 4,250 pictures taken using its GigaPan EPIC Pro robotic mount.
