Microsoft Research to Launch New England Lab

Microsoft Research, the basic research arm of computing heavyweight Microsoft Corp., revealed Monday that it will open a lab in Cambridge, Mass., in July. Microsoft Research New England will be the company’s first East Coast-based research center and sixth overall. Microsoft Research said the new facility will enable it to interact with the large community of scientists in New England, particularly the faculty and students at various premier academic institutions. Veteran Microsoft researcher Jennifer Tour Chayes has been named the lab's managing director. The Redmond, Wash.-based outfit noted that Chayes is the first woman to lead one of its international research laboratories.
