Microsoft Slashes Smartphone Jobs, Cuts 1,850

Redmond-based Microsoft has slashed jobs at its smartphone hardware business, saying Wednesday that it will cut up to 1,850 positions as part of a major "streamline" of the business. The move comes as the company has been trimming its phone hardware operations which has suffered as the company has failed to gain meaningful traction against Android and iOS phones. The company said it will take a restructuring charge of approximately $950M. The 1,350 jobs are at Microsoft Mobile Oy in Finland -- formerly, Nokia -- plus another 500 jobs around the world.
