Microsoft Claims Big Tag Month
Redmond-based Microsoft is claiming it is seeing a big increase in adoption of its Microsoft Tag barcode technology, saying it has seen the biggest scanning month ever using its technology. Microsoft said scans of Tag have doubled over the past three months, with three billion tags printed during the last six months. The firm said the leading industry adopting its tags is publishing, followed by retail and entertainment. Microsoft is locked in an effort to push its Tag technology against such competitors as the open QR code standard. Both Tag and QR codes are 2D barcodes, which are being used to link consumers to additional web content and information when they scan those tags using their mobile phones. QR codes have been in use for years, and were originally developed in Japan; Microsoft introduced its Tag technology in January of 2009.
