Microsoft Buys 800 Patents From AOL
Bellevue-based Microsoft Corp. is purchasing 800 patents from AOL, in a deal worth $1.056 billion, the two firms announced this morning, including a deal to license more than 300 additional patents and patent applications from AOL to Microsoft. According to the two companies, the patents cover advertising, search, content generation/management, social networking, mapping, multimedia/streaming, and security technology. AOL said it would use proceeds from the sale for deferred tax assets, as well as to return a "significant portion" of those proceeds to shareholders, helping to unlock value for its current shareholders.
