Pelago: Stop Playing Farmville

Seattle-based Pelago, the maker of the Whrrl mobile social networking software, is looking to dislodge users from playing Farmville, Mafia Wars, and other virtual games, saying today that it has launched its latest version of its Whrrl application in hopes of getting people to do things in the real world. Along with the new software, the firm said it has launched an effort at SXSW in Austin called the Austin Underground Society, to provide information about parties, events, and other fun things to do at the conference. The firm said it will also provide merchant offers from merchants in Austin as part of that promotion. Whrrl's latest software includes check-in to public places, "societies" focused on specific subject interest, recommendations of things to do at places, and more. The software is geared toward letting users document their real life experiences at places, with photos, text, and other information, and to share that information with friends.
