Portland Sues Uber, Seeks Shutdown

The City of Portland has sued on-demand ridesharing service Uber, accusing the startup of operating an "illegal, unregulated transportation service", saying that Uber is in violatoin of the city's Private for Hire Transportation Regulations and Administrative Rules. Portland said it filed suit in Multnomah County Circuit Court, after Uber started offering services in Portland on Friday. Portland said it had delvered a "Cease and Desist" order to Uber as of Monday morning. Portland said it has aked a court to order Uber to stop operating in Portland, until it is in compliance with the city's safety, health, and consumer protection rules. Uber has been hoping to expand to Portland since at least 2013, saying at that time that it had been "stymied" by Portland's "outdated" local regulations around transportation.
