SplashCast To Shut Free Accounts, Abandons Freemium Model

Portland-based Splashcast is pulling the plug on its free service, saying Wednesday that it will pull support for the firm's free products. In what the firm said was "a tough decision," the company said that it has decided that the sweet spot for the firm's product is for premium--that is, paying--content providers who are using the firm to distribute content within social networks. SplashCast's products are used to embed video in social newtorks, blogs, and other web sites. In an explanation, SplashCast said that its revenue model focuses on providing advertisers access to their network. SplashCast said it has over 100,000 publishers using its free product, but that it hasn't been "dedicating attention and resources" to that part of the business. The company said the services will be shutdown on February 11th.
