RealNetworks In Setback On RealDVD Lawsuit

Seattle-based RealNetworks has received a setback on a lawsuit filed against the firm by movie studios, upset at the firm's RealDVD software. A federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted a preliminary injunction against RealNetwork's RealDVD software, which allowed users to copy DVDs to their PCs. RealNetworks, which released the software in September of 2008, but rapidly pulled it from the market after a temporary injunction and lawsuit against the firm by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), said in a statement that the firm was "disappointed that a preliminary injunction" had been placed on the sale of RealDVD. RealNetworks said it would be reviewing the ruling to determine its course of action. RealNetworks pulled RealDVD in October of 2008 after the lawsuit was filed.
