Geospiza Applies Cloud Computing To Genetic Analysis

Seattle-based genetic analysis software maker Geospiza reported this week that the firm is tapping Amazon's web services offering, Amazon Web Services, to help its customers conduct genetic analysis. According to Geospiza, it is teaming up with Applied Biosystems to tap cloud computing to scale out gene sequencing efforts, which are typically very computationally intensive. The firm said it will use Amazon Web Services to tap into "massive processing capacity" for sequencing genomes. Gene sequencing efforts usually require building large clusters for massively parallel computing; the new effort links Applie Biosystems' SOLiD system directly into Amazon AWS.
