Elemental Releases Video Processing Product

Portland, Oregon-based Elemental Technologies reported this morning that the firm has released a beta of the firm's video processing system, which uses graphics processing hardware to accelerate video encoding and transcoding. The firm--which is venture backed by General Catalyst Partners, Voyager Capital, the Oregon Angel Fund, the Bend Venture Conference and Seattle Alliance of Angels--said that its product "radically lower costs" and increases performance in encoding and transcoding video content. The firm's technology uses the parallel processing capabilities of off-the-shelf, graphical processing hardware to more rapidly convert videos between different formats. The company claimed that its technology delivers the equivalent of 7 dual quad-core, CPU-only servers at a fraction of the price, in a 2U rackmount unit. Pricing on its product was not released.
