Amazon To Start Sales Tax Collection In California

Amazon will be turning on sales tax collection in another state tonight, as it starts collecting sales taxes from California residents starting at midnight. The move--which was negotiated with the State of California last year--comes as Amazon has increasingly looked to work with states on the issue, despite years of resisting collecting sales taxes across the nation. Amazon had relied on a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that found that retailers outside of a state did not need to collect sales taxes, due to a lack of physical presence in the state. Amazon already collects sales taxes in New York, Texas, and others.
