Amazon Launches In India

Amazon.com has launched its e-commerce efforts in India, the company said today, selling books, DVDs, and other products. The new site, Amazon India, is an interesting workaround to legal issues that Amazon faces in India, due to that country's prohibition on foreign online retailers selling directly to consumers in that country; instead, Amazon is taking advantage of its third party network of Amazon Marketplace vendors, who are fulfilling all of the sales on Amazon's website for the company. Amazon has been seeking to have those Indian legal laws changed since earlier this year. Amazon does not yet offer up the electronics, computers, phones, and other wide variety of products it does elsewhere on the new site.
