Bill Gates Backed Memphis Meats Gets New Funding From Tyson Foods
Memphis Meats, a Bill Gates-backed startup which is developing lab-grown, meat products--meat produced directly from animal cells, rather than by raising animals--has received an investment from Tyson Foods, the company said this week. Size of the new investment was not announced. Memphis Meats has previously raised funding from such investors as DFJ, Atomico, Cargill, Bill Gates and Richard Branson. Tyson said it made the investment as it looks towards technology that will enable the feeding of a billion more people in the world by 2030, in a way that is sustainable. Gates made his investment in Memphis Meats last year. Memphis Meats' technology is evocative of the fictional "Chicken Little", the giant lab grown chicken in Frederick Pohl's science fiction classic, "The Space Merchants". More information »
