UW Launches Startup Incubator

The University of Washington unveiled a new, startup incubator Wednesday, in what it says is a bid to double startups produced by the school over the next three years. The new business incubator, at the UW Center for Commercialization New Ventures Facility, has 11,500 square feet of office space, and 11,500 square feet of lab space, and will initially host 15 companies, with space for a total of 25 startups. The university said the first startups in the space are Nexgenia, focused on polymer-based nanotechnology; Envitrum,developing a process for converting waste glass into building materials; and VIxim, a company developing simulation software for the cloud. UW said it wants to move from producing an average of 10 startups a year to 25.
