Microsoft: Recovering Sidekick Data Possible

Microsoft, on the heels of an enormous, data loss fiasco for T-Mobile Sidekick users, linked to its Danger subsidiary, said today that it believes it has recovered most--if not all--of the data thought to be lost in a system failure last weekend. According to Microsoft, it said it plans to begin restoring users' personal data in the system "as soon as possible." The firm blamed the data loss on a system failure, which affected a core database and the back-up of that database. The company is now saying that it believes the data loss affected "a minority" of Sidekick users. The notice came days after T-Mobile told its users it believed that it had irrecoverably lost the data, started allowing users to terminate their contracts with no penalty, and said it would pay users $100 in compensation for the data loss. In addition, there are now at least two lawsuits against Microsoft and T-Mobile over the data loss.
