Amazon Debuts NoSQL Database Service

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services has rolled out a new, cloud service today, saying it has launched a new, NoSQL database service called Amazon DynamoDB. The company said the new service provides extremely fast, predictable performance and "seamless" scalability. NoSQL databases are an alternative to traditional database systems, and is instead optimized for scaling and growth. NoSQL adresses performance issues encountered by traditional, relational databases when used by very large deployments. Amazon itself is using DynamoDB in its advertising, Amazon Cloud DRive, IMDb, and Kindle products, according to the firm. Among features of the new service are the use of solid state drives to store data, replication of data across zones, and a free tier of service with up to 100MB of storage and certain performance limits.
