Cray Ties NVIDIA Kepler GPUs to Cascade

Cray, the supercomputer maker which is based in Seattle, said yesterday that it has tied its upcoming, next generation supercomputer--codenamed "Cascade"--into graphical processing unit (GPU) chips from NVIDIA. The firm said that NVIDIA's Tesla GPUs will be made as part of its upcoming supercomputer. GPUs are being used nowadays for HPC environments, turning the very fast computational capabilities of those GPUs--originally designed for graphics manipulations in graphics cards--towards more generic high performance computing and highly parallel computations. Cray is aiming at shipping its Cascade computers in 2013.
