Cray Wins $97M Contract

Seattle-based supercomputer maker Cray said today that it has scored a $97M contract, to upgrade a supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Cray said the contract was signed to upgrade the Cray XT5 Supercomputer "Jaguar" being used by the Department of Energy, to a Cray XK6. Cray said the upgrade will bring the performance of that system up to between 10 and 20 petaflops. Cray explained that the first phase of the upgrade is expected to be complete in 2011, and will generate more than $60M in product revenue; the remainder of the upgrade is expected to be complete in the second half of 2012.
