ESI Chops 45 Employees, Shuts Massachusetts Plant

Portland-based Electro Scientific Industries said Monday that it has cut 45 employees, and closed an assembly plant and development center in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. ESI--which makes laser-based products used in the semiconductor and other markets--said the move is part of a streamlining of its operations. The company said that the products developed at its Mass. plant will be transferred to the company's other locations. The company expects to have a savings of $4.5M in annual costs via the cuts.
