Kymeta Completes Trial On Iconic Maltese Falcon Yacht

Redmond-based Kymeta has completed its first trial of its high speed, satellite network and supporting terminals and antennas, on the iconic Maltese Falcon yacht. The yacht--originally built by famed venture capitalist Tom Perkins--apparently ran Kymeta's communications products over the last four months, on sea trials across the Caribeena, the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. The Maltese Falcon is currently owned by a charter firm called Pleon Ltd. Kymeta said the trials, conducted with its satellite partner, Intelsat S.A. and superyacht distributor e3 Systems, are part of a deal with e3 to provide yacht customers with Kymeta's terminals and its KALO internet access service, tied into IntelsatOne's Flex for Maritime service. Pricing on those solutions were not announced by the companies. Kymeta's products are based on metamaterials technology, which enables the company's flat panel antennas to be electronically steered--a huge technology advanced from bulky, physically steered, and far less reliable satellite antennas currently used on maritime vessels.
