Robot Research Firm, Sarcos, Unveils Robotic Snake

Sarcos, a developer of robots which has offices in Bellevue, said this week that it has launched what it says is the first, commercially available robotic snake. Sarcos said its Guardian S Robot can crawl along pipelines, trhough culverts, up walls, and climb stairs, and is aimed at use in the public safety, security, disaster recovery, infrastructure inspection, aerospace, maritime, oil and gas, and mining areas. The robot will be available in the fall. Sarcos--which was once part of Raytheon--is known for its powered military exoskeletons (think "Iron Man"), which it has developed for DARPA. Sarcos said its new robotic snake leighs less than 8 pounds, and has 16 hours of battery life, and also included two way, real-time video and voice features.
