Microsoft To Pay $105.75M In Patent Lawsuit

Redmond-based Microsoft has been ordered to pay $105.75M in a patent lawsuit, filed against the firm by Silicon Valley firm VirnetX. According to VirnetX, a jury awarded the amount for infringement of two of the firm's patents. Those patents covere virtual private network and secure communications protocols. VirnetX said it will be requesting injunction relief at a later date, expects Microsoft to appeal, and will "vigorously defend" its rights in any appeal. The suit had been filed in February of 2007 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas-Tyler Division.
