Cray Taps NVIDIA For GPU Blade

Seattle-based supercomputer maker Cray said today that it has linked up with NVIDIA to create a graphical processing unit (GPU) blade based on NVIDIA's Tesla 20-Series GPUs. GPUs are being used by high performance computing firms not for graphical processing, but for accelerating computational tasks. According to Cray, the new blade will attach into Cray's XE6 system. GPUs--basically, specialized processors optimized and executing certain mathematical operations very quickly--have been increasingly used by HPC developers to accelerate specific operations in calculations. Cray's XE6 was launched in May.
