Amazon Takes On Square With Local Register

Seattle-based Amazon.com launched a new product this morning, aimed directly at payment company Square and its ubiquitous smartphone-connected credit card readers. According to Amazon.com, it has launched Amazon Local Register, a secure card reader and mobile app aimed at local businesses. The new service and device lets local businesses accept both credit and debit cards, by swiping them through the device from a smartphone or tablet. Amazon is charging $10 for its card reader, however, Amazon.com said it will credit back the first, $10 in transaction fees to a customer's account once the app is in use. The mobile app is free.
