Cray Deploys GPU Supercomputer In Switzerland

Seattle-based Cray announced this morning that it has deployed its Cray CS-Storm cluster supercomputer in Switzerland, at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), for weather forecasting. Cray said the supercomputer is the first, GPU-accelerated supercomputer being used to run production numerical weather models for a major national weather service, the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss). GPUs--originally developed to accelerate graphics processing--are now widely being used as the building blocks for supercomputer and computation acceleration. Cray says the new system has a peak performance of 15 teraflops per node. The system uses NVIDIA's Tesla K80 CPUs.
