Vulcan Backs MEMS Firm Sand 9

Vulcan Capital has backed Sand 9, a developer of MEMS-based, precision timing products, as a major participant in that firm's latest financing round. Sand 9, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., said it raised $23M in a Series C funding round, which was led by Intel Capital and also included "significant" participation from Vulcan Capital. Other investors in the firm are Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, General Catalyst Partners, Khosla Ventures and CSR. Sand9 said the funds go to ramp volume production of its micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) timing devices. Those devices are used for timing circuits in smartphones, tablets, and other products.
