Widevine Gets New Patent

Seattle-based Widevine reported Thursday that it has scored another patent. The firm said the patent, its 63rd, covers transcoding of broadcast content for Internet delivery. Widevine said the patent was awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Widevine did not provide the name or number of the patent which was granted to the firm, but did say that the patent was co-authored by Widevine CTO Glenn Morten. A search of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's database of patent applications shows the firm has at least 37 applications for patents on its technology in progress. Widevine is a developer of digital rights management (DRM) software, used to protect digital content. Widevine is backed by Cisco Systems, Charter Ventures, Constellation Ventures, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd, Liberty Global, PaceSetter Capital Group, Phoenix Partners, Samsung Ventures America, TELUS , and VantagePoint Venture Partners
