Microsoft Releases Beta Of Free Security Tool

Microsoft has released a beta of a free, consumer focused security tool called Microsoft Security Essentials, which replaces the firm's paid Windows Live OneCare service. The beta--which apparently has already reached maximum capacity for participants--will provide anti-malware and antivirus capability for free to consumers. The general release of the software is targeted for fall. Microsoft had said in November of last year that it would be phasing out Windows Live OneCare, and replacing it with a free security product.
