Isilon Adds Solid State Disk Support

Seattle-based Isilon said this week that it has added support for solid state disks to its lineup of products. The addition of the disks, which use semiconductor memory instead of spinning platters, is expected to accelerate Isilon's performance by as much as twice the IOPS rate and 8X latency, the firm said. Isilon is using the SSDs for metadata-intensive namespace operations on its products, which it says are particularly useful in server virtualization, electronic design automation (EDA), and financial quantitative analysis uses. The solid state disks are being used in its 5000S-SSD, 10000x-SSD, and 32000x-SSD products, and are using solid state disks from STEC. Isilon said that the 5000S-SSD started as $59,900, the 10000x-SSD of $65,000, and the 32000X-SSD costs $125,000 per node.
