Amazon Web Services Adds Solid State Storage To EC2

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services is looking to speed up instances of its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), with new support for solid state storage, the firm said Wednesday evening. Amazon said it will begin providing solid-state-disk (SSD) backed storage for EC2, via a new, High I/O instance type for the service. The use of SSDs will help deliver very fast IOPs time--120,000 read IOPs and 80,000 write IOPS--which is expected to bolster the performance of such things as transaction processing, mobile and streaming applications, and time series analysis. Amazon said the new instance type is available across its various interfaces, and will initially be available in its US-East and EU-West regions.
