Amazon Domain Plan Opposed By Brazil, Peru

A plan by Amazon.com to own and operate the global top level domain (gTLD) .AMAZON is facing some opposition from an interesting source: the countries of Brazil and Peru, two of the countriesthe original Amazon (river) flows. A complaint with ICANN from the two countries says that the two countries are opposed to the plan, both because giving rights to the specific gTLD would prevent use of the domain for the public interest of the Amazon biome, and also hinder possibility of use of the domain to the population that inhabits the Amazon geographic region. Brazil and Peru are asking Amazon.com to withdraw its application for the gTLD; about 61 percent of Peru is considered part of the Amazon, according to the country.
